The Effect of Thermophilic Microflora on Transformation and Decolorization Characteristics of Azo Dyes with Different Structures

A previously screened thermophilic microflora was used to investigate the decolorization and transformation effect on five kinds of azo dyes including Sky blue,Congo red,Methyl orange,Acid scarlet and Amaranth,and the decolorization ability on azo dyes with different structures. In this study,it was found that thermophilic microflora owns good decolorization effect on azo dyes of Methyl orange and Amaranth which containing only one azo bond and smaller molecular weights,where the decolorization rates were always above 99%during the test concentration ranges( 200-1 000 mg / L),and the decolorization effects were almost not influenced by the concentration of dyes. However,the decoloriztion ratios of the azo dyes containing two azo dye bonds and larger molecular weights( Acid scarlet,Congo red and Methyl orange) decreased with the increment of the concentrations of azo dye.In addition,the decolorization rates of thermophilic microflora on different azo dyes showed an increasing tendency with the prolongation of the incubation time.During the former 9 h of incubation,the decolorization rates of Methyl orange,Amaranth and Acid scarlet with smaller molecular weights and simple structures could reach high levels of above 99%.However,the highest decolorization rates of Congo red and Sky blue with large molecular weight and complex structure could only reach lower levels of about 84%and 73% respectively after 13 h of incubation.The above results indicated that the decolorization effect of the microflora on different azo dyes were correlated with the concentration,molecular weight,number of azo dye bonds and the structure complexity of azo dyes. Lower decolorization abilities of thermophilic microflora were observed when the azo dyes were of higher concentration,larger molecular weight,larger azo dye bond number and higher structural complexity.
