Synthesis of Butyl Butyrate Catalyzed by p - Toluenesulphonic Acid Supported on Activated Carbon

Butyl butyrate was synthesized using p - toluenesulphonic acid supported on granule activated carbon as catalyst. Some factors influencing the reaction were discussed. It was shown that p - toluene sulphonic acid supported on activated carbon was an excellent catalyst.The yield of butyl butyrate could reach 98.61 % when the molar ratio of n - butyl alcohol to n - butyric acid was 1:1.4,reaction time 75 min,the dosage of catalyst based on total reactants 5.2%.
