On the Intermediate Phase Qualitative Changes of the Bronzes of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties

Bi Jingwei;
In the comparisons of the data of the bronzes, it is revealed that the qualitative changes in the development of the bronzes of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties were concretely shown as alterations or mutations of their types, forms and decors to form new appearances of the bronzes. These changes did not suddenly appear with the replacement of the dynasties but took place around the intermediate phase of these dynasties. The reason for this phenomenon would be that at the founding of the new dynasties, to consolidate their power, the new ruling groups would generally apply mild governance strategies, so their bronze-making techniques and utensil-using views needed a rather long time to popularize; at the same time, the bronze-making techniques and utensil-using customs of the downfallen former dynasties would be inherited by their adherents who still took major proportion of the population of the new dynasties. Therefore, bronzes at these periods could not be sharply changed in a short time.
