Analysis on the aerodynamic characteristics of variable camber airfoils with continuous smooth morphing trailing edge

Choosing variable camber airfoils as the objective,computations on the flow field around six configurations were carried out,the aerodynamic characteristics of different continuous smooth morphing airfoils and conventional deflection airfoil were analyzed,the impact of morphing parameters on aerodynamic characteristics was discussed,and the formation mechanism of the aerodynamic characteristics was studied;meanwhile,variable camber airfoil with continuous smooth morphing trailing edge was realized using shape memory polymer flexible skin and mechanical structures,and its aerodynamic characteristic was tested in wind tunnel experiments.The results from computations and experiments demonstrated that variable camber airfoils with continuous smooth morphing trailing edge had the capability to improve aerodynamic characteristic and flow separation characteristic of conventional main wing-plane flap airfoil;and morphing parameters such as the range of flexible section,the position of rotation axis,the deflection angle of trailing edge and the height of trailing edge had essential impact on aerodynamic characteristics.
