The differences of the area and number of osteocyte loculi in adult and adolescent alveolar cortical bone

Objective To compare the differences of the area and amount of osteocyte loculi in adult and adolescent alveolar cortical bone, and try to explain the different rate of tooth movement in different age. [WT5”HZ]Methods [WT5”BZ]Twenty two pieces normal cortical alveolar bone were collected from the orthognatic surgery patients in this hospital, 13 in adult group (age range: 25~28 years), 9 in adolescent group (age range: 10~14 years). The area and amount of osteocyte loculi were collected by Leica Quantiment 500 + analysis system.[WT5”HZ]Results [WT5”BZ]The area and amoun of osteocyte loculi were significantly higher in adolescent than that in adult group.[WT5”HZ]Conclusion [WT5”BZ]As the target cells of mechanic stress in bone matrix, the amount of osteocytes decreased with age. The phenomenon may partially explain the reason of the slower tooth movement in adult.[WT5”HZ]
