Importance of testing hepatitis B surface antigen in patients before orthodontic treatment

Objective To test the patients before orthodontic treatment for hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg) in order to avoid cross infection. Method 5246 patients in last three years were tested for HBsAg. The positive rates in different years were compared by chi square test. Results 13.38‰ of patients were tested positive in 1997, 12.34‰ in 1998, 16.10‰ in 1999. No significant difference was present(P0.05). Conclusion It's necessary to detect HBsAg in patients before orthodontic treatment so as to prevent cross infection.
