PYROPES IN PERIDOTITE XENOLITHS FROM KIMBERLITES IN SHANDONG AND LIAONING PROVINCES

Pyropes in peridotite xenoliths from kimberlites in Shandong and Liaoning provinces are purple in color. The classification of pyropes by Dawson and Stevens (1975) demonstrates that they belong mainly to category 9 (chrome-pyrope). They are rich in Cr_2O_3 and MgO and high in Cr/(Cr+A1), and knorringite and uvarovite molecules, but low in Fe_2O_3+FeO, Fe/(Fe+Mg), and grossular and almandine molecules as compared with those in the Cenozoic basalts of eastern China. There is a negative correlation between Cr_2O_3 and Al_2O_3 contents of the pyropes in peridotite xenoliths from kimberlites. The forming pressures of pyropes in peridotite xenoliths from kimberlites in Shandong and Liaoning have been established by the Malinovsky-Doroshev method (1977), showing that most of the pyropes fall into the diamond stability field (40×10~5kPa). They are indicator minerals for exploration of diamonds.
