Anatomical Study of Osseous Structure of the Palatovaginal Canal with Multislice Spiral CT Images

Objective To explore the normal anatomic features and the clinical application values on MSCT images and 3D-CT reconstructions of the palatovaginal canal by multislice spiral computer tomography(MSCT)scanner.Materials and Methods The normal palatovaginal canal was studied in 40 volunteers,in 30 patients who had maxillafacial injury while with intact palatovaginal canal and in 30 cases undergoing CTA which palatovaginal canal were unaffected using TOSHIBA Aquilion/16s scanner,The volume data were subjected to multiplanar reconstruction(MPR) on Vitrea-2 working station,and palatovaginal canals were observed and measured one by one.Results All the palatovaginal canals and adjacent structures were entirely and directly indicated on axial MSCT,MPR coronal and sagittal images,and CPR images.On axial MSCT,the palatovaginal canal was located behind pterygopalatine fossa and in the medial of the front part of pterygoid canal,triangle shaped,the average included angle of which approximately(31.3±3.1)°.On coronal MPR,the palatovaginal canal had different appearances,mainly appeared as round shaped(17.0%),ovoid-shaped(30.7%) and triangle shaped(40.0%).The inferior wall of the palatovaginal canal gradually varianced from integrity in anterior part to defect in the posterior part.On sagittal MPR,the form of the palatovaginal canal was displayed triangle or narrow fissure.The communicational paths of the palatovaginal canal,including pterygopalatine fossa,pterygoid canal,foramen rotundum,sphenopalatine foramen,pterygomaxillary fissure,pterygopalatine canal,greater palatine foramen and lesser palatine foramcn,were also directly appreciated on CPR images.Conclusion The images of MSCT can define the structure of palatovaginal canal and its communications very well.
