Objective To establish an animal model in goats for lengthening mandible by distraction osteogenesis. Methods Six goats were used in this study. Extraoral distractors were activated 7 days after bilateral mandibular osteotomies at a rate of l mm/d for 10 days. Results The mandible of all goats were lengthened successfully, and the regenerating bone in distraction gap was found exactly. Conclusion Goat is a good animal for developing an experimental model on study of distraction osteogenesis.
