Clinical study of fractured instruments retrieval in the root canals

Objective:To evaluate the effectiveness of dental operating microscope combined with ultrasound technique in the retrieval of fractured instruments in clinic.Method:17 cases with fractured instruments in the root canals were collected.Operating microscope combined with ultrasound technique was applied to retrieve the broken instruments.The type and distribution of broken instruments,the operating time and the success rate were recorded.Result:64.9 % fractured instruments were located in the root canals of maxillary and mandibular molars.The success rate of retrieval was 76.47 %.The four broken instruments(3 NiTi files and 1 K-file) of retrieval failures were located in the lower part of the root canals.Conclusion:The success rate of fractured instruments retrieval is closely related to the distribution of broken instruments in the teeth and root canals,type of broken instruments,experience of the operators and so on.Dental operating microscope combined with ultrasound technique can enhance the success rate of the fractured instruments retrieval in the root canals.
