Metal-ceramic bonding strength comparison among five porcelain fuse metal

Objective:To investigate and compare the metal-ceramic bonding strength of Ni-Cr alloy,Ni-Cr-Ti alloy, Co-Cr alloy,Pd-Ag alloy and pure Titanium. Method:Fifty wax patterns having dimensions 25 mm×3.0 mm×0.5 mm were prepared by a metal mold. Metal-ceramic specimens were fabricated with five types of metal-ceramic alloys,10 for each type of alloy. All samples were prepared by the clinical empirical heat treatment. Ceramco Ⅲ porcelain cement was fused and adhered to Ni-Cr alloy、Ni-Cr-Ti alloy、Co-Cr alloy and Pd-Ag alloy while Willi Geller porcelain cement to pure Titanium.The metal-ceramic bonding strengths were evaluated using a three-point bending test according to ISO9693. The bonding strength data was analyzed using ANOVA and Bonferroni's test by SPSS16.0. Result:The mean value of bonding strength of five alloys were(37.82±2.72)Mpa(Ni-Cr alloy),(39.23±2.45)Mpa(Ni-Cr-Ti alloy),(39.06±3.41)Mpa(Co-Cr alloy),(47.98±3.74) Mpa(Pd-Ag alloy)and(32.61±5.62)Mpa(pure Titanium).Ni-Cr alloy、Ni-Cr-Ti alloy and Co-Cr alloy groups(P 0.05), the first three groups have significant difference with both pure Titanium group and Pd-Ag alloy group(P 0.05),and Pd-Ag alloy group have significant difference with pure Titanium group too(P 0.05). Conclusion:According to the test result, the metal-ceramic bonding strengths of Ni-Cr alloy、Ni-Cr-Ti alloy and Co-Cr alloy are closed,which are greater than that of pure Titanium and lower than that of Pd-Ag alloy. The bonding strengths of all metal-porcelain systems are within the acceptable levels by ISO9693 standard(25 Mpa).
