Serum Levels of Interferon-gamma and Interleukin-10 in Patients with Chronic Glomerulonephritis and Their Clinical Significance

Objective:To assess the effect of Th1/Th2 cytokines imbalance on the development of chronic glomerulonephritis with different pathologic classification. Methods:33 chronic glomerulonephritis (include non-IgA mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis、IgA nephropathy、membranous nephropathy、focal segmental glomerulonephritis )and 12 patients with chronic renal failure、20 normal controls were involved in this experiment, their serum levels of IFN-γ and IL-10 were measured with sandwich ELISA, 24 hours urine protein quantity and serum creatinine were also detected, the results were analysed. Results: The levels of IFN-γ in non-IgA mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis and IgA nephropathy were much higher than that in controls, but in membranous nephropathy the level of IFN-γ was lower than that in controls. Simultaneously the level of IFN-γ in non-IgA mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis was correlated positively to 24 hours urine protein quantity. Compared with controls, the levels of IL-10 in three types of glomerulonephritis include non-IgA mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis、IgA nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis were decreased, and chronic renal failure as well. And results showed that there was highly negative correlation of IL-10 level with serum creatinine in chronic renal failure patients. Conclusion: IFN-γ may be involved in immunological renal injury of proliferative glomerulonephritis and the produce of urine protein. Significant decrease in the level of IL-10 play an critical role in the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis and the development of chronic renal failure. The balance between Th1 and Th2 cytokines determines the outcomes of diverse immunologically mediated clinical syndromes.
