Objective:To analyze the incidence and mortality of common gastrointestinal cancers among local residents in Luwan District,Shanghai from January 2004 to December 2011.Methods:The data of the common gastrointestinal cancers including esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, gallbladder cancer, and pancreatic cancer in permanent residents of Luwan District were systematically extracted from the Shanghai Cancer Registration and Management System. The incidence and mortality as well as the standardized rates based on the result of Chinese national census in 2000 and Segi's world standard population were calculated and analyzed. The average annual rate of change was calculated, and the temporal trends of incidence and mortality were analyzed using annual percent change(APC)model. Results:A total of 1 072 cases of stomach cancer,1 502 cases of colorectal cancer,718 cases of liver cancer,393 cases of pancreatic cancer,218 cases of esophageal cancer, and 207 cases of gallbladder cancer were diagnosed in the Luwan District,Shanghai from 2004 to 2011.The above six kinds of cancers accounted for 39.45% of the total malignant cases in the whole region during the same period, and the standardized incidences of six kinds of cancers were relatively stable from 2004 to 2011.Of the reported cancer deaths,896 patients died of colorectal cancer,849 patients died of stomach cancer,593 patients died of liver cancer,357 patients died of pancreatic cancer,194 patients died of esophageal cancer, and 191 patients died of gallbladder cancer during this period.Generally, both the incidence and mortality increased with the age of the population. Conclusions:From 2004 to 2011,the gastrointestinal cancers were at the forefront of the burden of malignant cancers for the permanent residents in Luwan District,Shanghai, and the degree of malignancy was relatively high.Especially for colorectal, stomach, and liver cancers in males,as well as colorectal and stomach cancers in females, the trends of incidence and mortality have been relatively stable in recent years. However, the incidence rate among young people is on the rise.
