Methyl n-nonylketone as an active principle of Herba Houttuyniae and its mechanism

AIM To investigate the active principle of Herba Houttuyniae and its mechanism.METHODS The chemical constituents of essential oil from Herba Houttuyniae were analyzed by GC/MS method.The immunopotentiating effects between sodium houttuyfonate and decanoyl acetaldehyde decomposition product were compared.RESULTS None of decomposition of decanoyl acetaldehyde in essential oil from Herba Houttuyniae were discovered in addition to methyl n-nonylketone.Sodium houttuyfonate and methyl n-nonyl ketone possessed immunopotentiating effects.Both of them can significantly strengthen the serum hemolysin,the delayed type of hypersensitivity reaction,the phagocytosing function of the macrophage and the activity of the NK cell.Both of them significantly enhanced the production of the spleen plaque forming cell(PFC),significantly suppressed the ear edema degree induced by croton oil.CONCLUSION The experimental data indicate the decanoyl acetaldehyde is a precursor.The decanoyl acetaldehyde decomposition product,methyl n-nonylketone,is an active principle of Herba Houttuyniae,and it possesses immunopotentiating effect useful in acute and chronic infectious diseases.
