Illness Narratives in Joyce Carol Oates's them

Joyce Carol Oates, an American female writer, has depicted a world of illnesses in them. Through illness narratives, Oates has portrayed the suffering body together with the distorted mind of all walks of life in America in both periods of poverty and abundance, reflecting the humanistic concern of an intellectual. Meanwhile, illness inflicted on individuals symbolizes disease of the whole American society and is a metaphor of the spirit of the nation.
