The Role of Repetition in Dubliner's Epiphany

XIA Jiao;College of Foreign Languages,Henan University of Engineering;
Epiphany is one of the most important writing skills developed by James Joyce. In the writing of Dubliners,Joyce immensely used this technique. Epiphany appeared at the end of each short story,and either the leading character in the novel or the reader himself recognized the dilemma and realized essence of life. In the sentences describing the epiphany of Dubliners,repetition appeared again and again,which can be expressive and contagious. This figure of speech was used by Joyce to add emphasis to language,vividly describing the moment of epiphany. It not only expressed how the writer feel about the paralysis of Dubliners,but also showed the numbness and lifelessness of Dublin life to the readers,expressing the theme of the novel better.
