Design of High Power Factor AC-DC LED Driver Chip Operated in Discontinuous Conduction Mode

An improved high power factor(PF)AC-DC LED driver circuit was proposed.One cycle control(OCC)strategy with fixed off-time(FOT)control method had ensured unit PF.Since the system operating in discontinuous conduction mode(DCM)would generate input current distortion during zero crossing,the zero crossing compensation(ZCC)circuit was added in the improved circuit.And then,the system modeling of the improved circuit had been built up.The feasibility of the strategy was verified in Simplis software.Optimized parameters of the compensation circuit were selected.Finally,the chip was implemented in HHNEC 0.5μm 5V/40 V HVCMOS process,and the chip layout size was 1 950μm×2 730μm.The prototype circuit was tested at the AC input voltage of 85-265 Vand the output power of 7-12 W.The test results indicated that the entire system power factor was more than 0.98,the max value was up to 0.9992,and the minimum total harmonic distortion(THD)was only 4.67%.
