Design of butterfly die for hollow aluminum profile and research on finite element numerical simulation for extrusion process

For forming the hollow aluminum extrusion parts, two kinds of traditional portholes die and new type the butterfly die were designed, and the 3D design model was respectively established. Combining with uniform normal constant speed extrusion process parameters, the finite element numerical simulation was made on the extrusion process of two dies by Hyper Xtrude. At the same time, the work area of die was optimization designed by using the software. Analysis and comparison was made on the parameters such as the flowing deformation pattern, pressure and speed of aluminum metal in the die cavity, and the inner stress and elastic deformation of die structure. Numerical simulation results showed that: the flowing and deformation of metal was more even in butterfly die than traditional die, the top dead zone of portholes bridge was shrunk, extrusion pressure curve was smooth; the die equivalent stress distribution was more uniform.
