A study on effects of boundary layer meteorology to wind turbines' power performance

The meteorological factors in Atmospheric Boundary Layer(ABL) have profound influences on wind turbines' status and performance during the operating process. The Light Detection And Ranging(LiDAR) equipment is used in this paper to carry out meteorological observation in a large scale wind farm, and the wind turbines' power performance under different turbulence, wind shear, diurnal variation and precipitation conditions are studied. The study results indicate that: high turbulence can increase or decrease the wind turbines' power curve around the cut-in and rated-power wind speed section, and can also increase output power scatters' dispersion; high wind shear can increase the wind turbines' power curve both around the cut-in and rated-power wind speed section, and can also decrease output power scatters' dispersion; ABL's meteorological factors,including turbulence and wind shear, have significant diurnal variations, and the wind turbines' power curve and output power scatters' dispersion are accordingly impacted, showing day/night differences;compared to the non-precipitation weather, the precipitation weather can increase both the wind turbines' power curve and output power scatters' dispersion. This paper's study results can provide references for business works like wind power projects' energy assessment and wind farms' output power forecasting.
