Property Analysis of Chemical Pretreated Luffa Fiber

In order to analyze the effect of chemical pretreatment on luffa fiber′ s properties, orthogonal experiment was designed to treat luffa fiber with NaOH and H_2O_2. Degumming rate, whiteness, chemical constituents, SEM,moisture regain and mechanical property were tested. The results showed that the optimized chemical pretreatment is NaOH 10% 、H_2O_22 g/L and to treat 4 hours. At this condition, the degumming rate and cellulose component and whiteness of luffa fiber is 55.4% and 79.1% and 54.2% respectively. The gum compositions of luffa fiber were removed more after chemical pretreated, hemicellulose content was removed almost 91.3% and the lignin content is high. The longer the scouring time is, the higher the degumming rate is. SEM shows that cellulose fibers are exposed because of removing of gum composition, the surface of luffa fiber is rough due to the obvious damage of chemical process. The moisture regain of luffa fiber increases with the improving of degumming rate, that of chemical treated luffa fiber is raised from 4.92% of untreated fiber to 12.80%. The breaking strength and elongation decrease with the improving of degumming rate. The chemical pretreatment helps the improvement of moisture regain of luffa fiber. The higher the degumming rate is, the lower the mechanical property is.
