The Dilemma and Transcendence of Ethics

DANG Yongqiang (Department of Philosophy,Nanjing University,Nanjing 210093)
According to MacIntyre, the loss of ethics is the result of the replacement of tradi- tional teleology by the modem idea of the ego during the Enlightenment Movement, which led to the failure of modem thinkers to give rationality to traditional ethics. However, his way to the transcen- dence of virtue turned out to be wishful thinking since he neglected the necessity of modern cultural transformation. In fact, the modern transformation of western society had destroyed the mechanism of traditional ethics, so the form of ethics had changed from self-discipline to institutional constraint. Therefore, ethics will walk out of the dilemma only with institutional justifiability as its basis, aided with social reform and cultural guidance.
