On Magic and Alienation in Su Shi's Literary Works

YU Shi-ling (Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210093, China)
My recent reading of Su Shi reveals that Su is a master in creating and using magic and alienation stories. Magic and alienation constitute a significant element of Su Shi's literary works and methods of literary creation. Recognizing it will help understand the overall trend of literature of the Song Dynasty, such as popularization of literary themes and substitution of prose for poetry. Magic and alienation exist in Sus literary works of different stages and different genres, endowing the works with a unique sense of beauty and flavor.
