Calculation of the Tension and Shape Parameter for TW-1 Target Towlines

This paper presents the derivation of the approximate equation which is used for the calculation of balanced attack angle of a target in stable flight, by the analysis of the equilibrum of forces acting on the towed target, and the derivation of the equations which are used for the calculation of the tension and shape parameters of the towline, by the analysis of the equilibrium of forces acting on a small curved element of the towline. The tension is related to the flight velocity, the flight altitude and the length of the towline. Calculation results of the tension by these equations agree well with the experimental results for MK3 target towline. The towline parametric design and calculation conducted by these equations are reliable, fully satisfying the requirement of the engineering design of the TW-1 target.
