On Cause and Research Strategy of Flow Asymmetry in High-Alpha Flows

Discussions are made on the cause leading to flow asymmetry in high alpha flows, and corresponding research strategy is proposed. It is indicated that the flow asymmetry is an inherent property(a bifurcation behaviour) of the flow field as a nonlinear dynamic system under appropriate flowing conditions. The flow asymmetry is inviscid in nature. Viscosity is not a necessary pre condition for the onset of the flow asymmetry, although its effects do exist. In contrast, asymmetric behaviours in viscous boundary layers are most probably the consequence of the asymmetric inducing actions of the outer inviscid flow. In view of flow characteristics demonstrated in high alpha flows, the flow asymmetry is actually a bifurcation and chaos phenomenon of the flow field as a nonlinear system. Hence, further exploration to the flow asymmetry must be done by the aid of bifurcation/chaos conceptions and methodology, besides conventional flow stability analysis and experimental approaches.
