Experimental Investigation on Hovering Rotor Wake Visualization

An experimental method and related equipment of hovering rotor wake visualization are presented. Elaborated the advantages are of smoke which result from the vaporization of dry ice and are used in the experiment to visualizating the wake geometry. It is also indicated that the selection of smoke as the visualization medium must consider the factors of the influence of smoke on the visualization result,the harmfulness of smoke on equipment and workers,the experimental economics and feasibility. On the other hand,the influence of related position between smoke sprayer and rotor on the reality of wake geometry is investigated and the emphasis is put on the influence of radial position of smoke sprayer showing the tip vortex on the edge of wake geometry. As a result,a reasonable position of smoke spray6r is determined. Finally,some investigation and analysis according to the experiment are carried out in order to investigate the effects of the number of blades,the rotor rotational speed and the blade collective on the wake geometry. It can be found that the experimental method presented in the paper,as compared with the experimental results carried out abroad,has not only the same results of wake visualization,but also the advantages of low experimental fee,simple operation and harmlessness to workers and equipment.
