Death of the Human Subjective Under Self-Gaze——A comparison of The Year 1984 and The Aged Floating Clouds

HUANG Lin(Chinese Institute, Shanxi Normal University, Xian, Shanxi 710062, China)
The Year 1984 and The Aged Floating Clouds reveal the demise of the human subjective under self-gaze with a fable structure. In Christian and Confucian cultural traditions, self-gaze symbolizes the root of virtue. However, in the process of civilization, it has been disciplined by the social power and degenerated to the disgusted self-discipline. The suppression of self-gaze to the human subjective leads us in pondering over how to keep and develop the freedom and independence of the subjective under the pressure of modern civilization.
