Processes of steppe soil degradation in Inner Mongolia and the roles of nature reserves on soil restoration and rebuilding

Since Holocene .soil has been advancing toward two directions,degradation and evolution as natural environment changes and productive scale extendes. In recent time .all changes of soil is caused by artificial action and natural factors. Research on climate change shows: since the pleistocene climate has been de veloping to aridity with fluctuation in inner Mongolia. Temperature rise and precipitation decrease resulted in vegetation type, biomass and quality changed since the last century. it made substances entering soil became less, mineralization speed up, soil nutrient reduced, soil structures were destroyed in different extent,evaporation became stronger .soluble salt accumunlated gradually. soil developed to degradation. It was the pro - cess of natural degradation. On the background of the global change. the problem of population .resources and environment become more sharp .Grassland was used in over-grazing condition,soil influx became lesser,outflow became more, the balance and cycle of energy and substances were destroyed. soil became sandy, infertile. Hardness increased. permeability decreased it was called artificial degradation process of soil.Natural reserve has three fundmental roles during the process of degraded steppe soil restoration; 1. Protecting typical soil profile and monitoring the changes of soil physical,chemical characteristics in core area. 2.The buffer zone can be used as field for study of soil degradation mechanism. 3. For sustainable use and development of grassland,we should set some examples for local people in experimental zone and absorb them to take part in the projects of protecting grassland.
