Discrepancy Between Color Words of English and Chinese

Ruan Xiaomei Foreign Languages Department, Huai Hai Polytechnical College, Jiangsu Lianyungang 222005
English and Chinese belong to different families of languages. Affected by specific features of language and culture, people have different reflections to colors and consequently the words of colors in both languages carry the different meanings and significance. While translating, we should not take them too literally, or match them word-by-word. Attention should be paid to the thorough understanding of the cultural differences and the context in which the words appear.
