XIAO Jing;School of Fine Arts, Nantong University;
The Fa-hai Temple frescoes could be considered as the most exquisite frescoes of Ming Dynasty. The artistic values of these frescoes lie not only in the superb techniques of painting but also in the secularization elements.The secularization of themes, figures and techniques is one of the unique characteristics of the Fa-hai Temple frescoes.The secularization elements of the Fa-hai Temple frescoes are closely related to the trend of introducing Confucianism into Buddhism during the early Ming Dynasty and the stylistic transformation of the early Ming Dynasty court paintings. The Fa-hai Temple frescoes illustrated the "Confulegalistic Hierarchical Ethical Order" of Confucianism throughout the image plane composition and break through the themes of traditional frescoes by personifying the religious figures with vivid and realistic characteristics and introducing the taste of natural real life into the scene. In the respect of the coloring concept,the Fa-hai Temple frescoes inherited the traditional Chinese local decorative color matching laws and at the same time retained the conformity the kind in applying colors. The combination of decoration and realism of coloring brings the Fa-hai Temple frescoes a splendid and luxurious artistic style. The Fa-hai Temple frescoes illustrated those sacred religious themes with secular elements in forms and artistic tastes, and thus displayed a new living expression of "Humanism".
