How to select proper plants and planting patterns is essential to the construction of xeriscape. Drought-resistant and water-saving plants are the base of xeriscape, with respects to reducing water-consuming lawns, proving more shades for planting beds, and using drought-resistant-and-shade-tolerance plants. Using easy-to-grow plants is feasible for xeriscape since they are easily adapted to different types of soils and transplantation with strong resistance to insects. Applying low-maintenance plants with self-sowing ability and little attendance is important for sustainable landscape. Indigenous plants and typical communities are the destined choices for locally characteristic landscapes to develop sustainably. There are also some plants with high qualities which have a good prospect to be applied in xeriscape.
