The shape of the knife for shredding biomass, especially maize stalks,is studied in this paper. The curly and straight knives prove applicable for shredding biomass.A biomass shredding system is designed which consists of a primary shredder,a fine shredder and collecting devices.Test results indicate that the particle size of biomass after primary shredding is under 10 mm,and after the fine shredding the particle size is smaller than 0.5 mm.Moreover, the shredding mechanisms and factors which influence the shredding rate and particle size are investigated experimentally. The economical working parameters for this system are obtained. This work provides firm basis for the industrial utilization of biomass shredding and biomass energy.
