Multimodal Metonymy and Meaning Construction in Visual Discourse

Feng De-zheng;Zhao Xiu-feng;The Hong Kong Polytechnic University;China University of Petroleum;
With the development of multimodal metaphor theory,researchers have started to investigate conceptual metonymy in multimodal discourse. However,so far studies of multimodal metonymy have been focusing on the explanation of this phenomenon based on case analysis,and no theoretical model has been proposed to explicate its categories and working mechanism. Based on semiotic theories,this paper distinguishes three types of multimodal metonymy,namely,reference metonymy,sign metonym and concept metonymy,then proposes that the visual construction of meaning is essentially metonymic and elucidates the manifestation of the three types of metonymy in visual images based on the social semiotic visual grammar. The paper develops a systematical framework for multimodal and visual metonymy on the one hand,and provides new epistemological explanation for visual grammar and meaning construction in visual images on the other hand.
