Influence of Testes Removed on Immune Function in Kunming Mice

The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis states that the cost of expressing the secondary sexual characteristics is the suppression of immunity in male animals.In order to test this hypothesis,eighteen male Kunming mice were assigned into the testes removed group(n=9)and the testes sham removed group(n=9)randomly,whose immunological parameters were subsequently assessed.We found testicle excision had no impact on body mass and body compositions including wet carcass mass,subcutaneous,retroperitoneal,perigonadal,mesenteric and composite fat masses in mice.However,testes removed increased significantly the masses of thymus and spleen,total white blood cells in mice.Moreover,bacteria killing capacity indicative of innate immunity was 232.2% higher in the testes removed group than that in the testes sham removed group,although no statistical significant difference was detected.These results supported the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis.Phytohemagglutinin(PHA)responses indicative of cellular immunity after 12 h,24 h,72 hof PHA injection were significantly reduced by testes removed,which was against the hypothesis.In summary,different immunological parameters responded differently to testes removed in mice.Whether these changes are triggered by the lack of testosterone in testes removed mice need further research in the future.
