The Status of Bi Yuan's Compiling History Books in His Office in the Development of Historiography during Qianlong Period

QIAO Zhi-zhong,LI Jin-hua (college of History,Nankai University,Tianjin 300071,China)
In the reign of Qianlong in Qing Dynasty, the historiography of government is thriving, and the compiling of many large and systematic historical books is almost occupied by the government. The activities to compile history books in Bi Yuan's office in the official ways of organizing people to cooperate make up the shortage of private compiling history in manpower, material and historical resources. Being represented by the compiling activities of Xu Zizhitongjian and Shiji Kao,it breaks the monopoly of government and challenges the dominant position of government summary of the historical heritage, which has important significance in historiography, and becomes a new factor in the development of historiography in Qianlong period. On the other hand, the unsuccessful compiling of Shiji Kao reflects its shortcoming such as insufficient organization and restriction by the political situation.
