Crystal Growth and Spectral Properties of Ce:BaAlF_5

The single crystal of Ce:BaAlF_5 has been grown by the ver-tical Bridgman technique.X-ray diffraction patterns show that its structureis the same as that of α-BaAlF_5(orthorhombic).The calculated cell Para-meters are α=5.146(?),b=7.191(?),and c=19.647(?).The reflection,ab-sorption,excitation and emission spectra of Ce:BaAlF_5 crystals were measured.There is a strong absorption peak near 290nm due to the 4f-5d transitionof Ce~(3+)ions.Emission peaks at 306.5nm and 324 nm were observed under292 nm excitation.They are due to the 2D-2F_(5/2)and 2D-2F_(7/2)transitionsof Ce~(3+)ions.It was observed that violet light and blue-whitishlight wereemitted from Ce:BaAlF_5 crystals when they were irradiated by a UV-lamp.Under the excitation of 254nm,two luminescence peaks near 351nm and 494nmwere found except the emission peaks of Ce~(3+).
