Optimization of Nickel Coating on Diamond Abrasive Particle at Different Lapping Stages

Layer with different Ni-P coating mass gain was prepared on two kinds of diamond particles of different size by electro-less plating. The morphology of coating was observed by SEM. Fixed abrasive pads(FAP) were prepared embedded with nickel plated diamond particles and used as coarse lapping and fine lapping respectively. The machining performance of different FAP was explored. The results demonstrate that morphology of diamond particles changes significantly with Ni-P coating mass gain. The coefficient of friction(COF),material removal rate(MRR) and roughness of work-piece increase first then decrease as the coating mass gain increasing and reach maximum when Ni-P coating mass gain is30% during fine lapping process. The MRR and roughness of work-piece increase first then decrease with the increase of coating mass gain and reach maximum when Ni-P coating mass gain is 50% during coarse lapping process. The requirements of coarse lapping process for the ability of resin matrix to hold grains is higher than fine lapping process.
