Synthesis and Optical Properties of CeO_2 Nanorods by Hydrothermal Method

CeO2 nanorods have been successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method using Ce Cl3·7H2O as cerium source,Na OH as mineralizer,and ethylenediamine as complexant. The CeO2 nanorods were examined by XRD,SEM,TEM,XPS,UV-vis and PL. The results show that the main valence of cerium was + 4,and in the sample there existed a small number of Ce3 +. The direct band gaps are 3. 014 e V,3. 143 e V,2. 931 e V,and 2. 927 e V for the CeO2 nanorods synthesized within 2 h,18 h,50 h,and 100 h,respectively. These band gaps are smaller than bulk CeO2,and oxygen vacancies and Ce3 +ions result in an effective red shifting of the band gap. The visible luminescence exhibits similar emission peaks of photoluminescence and the emission intensity increases with the increase of concentration of oxygen vacancies and Ce3 +.
