Size Effect of Isotropic Pyrolytic Graphite during Indentation Experiment

In order to develop the technology of precision /ultra-precision machining of isotropic pyrolytic graphite,the micro /nano-scale indentation size effect of the material was studied via indentation experiment. Based on the establishing of load range in indentation experiment,the indentation size effect was investigated under different loads. The results show that,in order to improve the confidence of indentation size effect,the load in the experiment should be larger than 450 μN. Besides,both hardness and elasticity modulus of isotropic pyrolytic graphite perform a certain extent of size effect. Furthermore,the indentation size effect is mainly depended on the movement of dislocation in the spherical unit of surface. When the resistance is small,the indentation size effect is obvious; when the resistance is large,the indentation size effect is non-obvious.
