Effects of Noble Pd Deposition on the Photocatalytic Performance of BiOCl

A series of Pd /BiOCl composite nanoplates with different Pd concentration(0. 5%,1%,2%,4%) were synthesized via photochemical deposition method. The prepared products were characterized by some physicochemical characterizations such as X-ray diffraction(XRD),N2-physical adsorption /desorption,scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(UV-vis DRS). Acid orange II as model pollutants-dye was chosen for the object of photocatalytic degradation. The effects of this series of catalysts in degradation of acid orange II were evaluated under both UV light(λ = 254 nm)and visible light irradiation. The results show that about 2 nm Pd nanoparticles were successfully deposited over the BiOCl nanoplates. The specific surface area of the catalyst show no obvious variations due to the deposition of Pd nanoparticles. However, the UV-Vis DRS results indicate that Pd nanoparticles can enable the catalyst to exhibit slightly absorption ability to visible light. The activity texts demonstrat that the deposition optimum Pd nanoparticles with 2%(mass fraction) gives 2. 1 times increase in activity under UV light irradiation and 6. 3 times increase under visible light irradiation.
