Surface Modification and Characterization of Silica Using Behenyl Alcohol with Long Alkyl Group

In this paper,the precipitated silica was modified by behenyl alcohol. The effects of long alkyl group on the morphology and properties of silica particles were investigated by infrared spectrum analysis(FTIR),thermogravimetry(TG),elemental analysis(EA),contact angle instrument,laser particle size analyzer and transmission electron microscope(TEM). The results show that alkyl group was successfully grafted onto the silica surface and the corresponding grafting content is 0. 0328 mol /g. The dispensability and hydrophobic of modified silica particles are improved than that of unmodified precipitated silica,and the corresponding contact angel of silica particles increases from 0° to 132°. Meanwhile,the diameter distribution of silica particles becomes much narrower. The corresponding average size of silica particles decreases from 491. 2 nm to 240 nm.
