Properties and Growth Method Development of Alexandrite Crystals

The physical properties,the crystallization behaviors,the spectra and laser properties of alexandrite (Cr 3+ ∶BeA1 2O 4) crystal are described. Some problems with growing Cr 3+ ∶BeA1 2O 4 crystals by Czochralski (CZ) method were discussed. In order to make it possible to grow high quality Cr 3+ ∶BeA1 2O 4 crystal by means of CZ method the growth process,such as lower pulling velocity, faster rotating speed and growing large diameter crystal technique must be used. Another growth method, such as the temperature gradient method has been used for crystal Cr 3+ ∶BeA1 2O 4 growth successfully. The temperature gradient method as compared with CZ method can decrease pollution from raw materials, and be ease to achieve computer automatic control for crystal growth.
