Effects of Surface Roughness in Boundary Lubrication

Using a modified disk machine, the authors have studied experimentally the effects of surface roughness on the boundary friction and wear. The lubricant used in experiments is No.30 mineral oil adding with one percentage of stearic acid. The results obtained show that the coefficient of friction and volume of wear decrease with decreasing surface roughness; but for very smooth surface, the coefficient of friction and the volume of wear increase with decreasing surface roughness.
