Effects of Loading System Stiffness on Tribological Properties of Third Rail under Electric Current

The effects of loading system bracing stiffness on the tribological characteristics of third rail/collector shoe under electrical current were studied by the modified jig of CETR UMT-2 tester.Normal forces changing with time,friction coefficients,and wear mass losses of collector shoe specimens were measured,morphology of worn surfaces were observed,and the relation between bracing stiffness and property of friction and wear with electric current was analyzed.The results show that the vibration amplitude of normal force and wear mass loss induced by arc erosion both increase with the decreasing of normal force under different bracing stiffness;elastic bracing system changes the vibration characteristics of loading system,which makes vibration amplitude of normal force and the wear mass losses less then those of in rigid bracing system.For better power feeding of third rail system,choosing appropriate range of normal force and rational stiffness of loading system is necessary to decrease the wear mass loss induced by arc erosion,and to prolong wear life of frictional pair.
