Basic Shared Values are needed for Intercultural Dialogue

Ma Rong
Without common or similar values between the elite group and ordinary people in any country, there will be no complete trust upon each other.Likewise,in the absence of shared values between two countries, the so-called "strategic partnership" and "strategic relationship of mutual benefit" established through diplomatic channels could just be mere diplomatic rhetoric and perfunctory official duties, and there will never be true political mutual trust or concern on the other side's interests. We now need to think about gradually creating "sameness" with our important strategic partners in terms of basic values, promoting the principle of "seeking common ground while reserving the differences" in our exchanges with foreign countries, and taking harmony as the main thread and keynote in our efforts to coordinate differences in other areas.
