"Pareto Optimality" as Reflected by Confucian Rule of Rites

Liu Jianhui
The traditional Confucian rule of rites was established on the basis of giving equal importance to material interests and values of "benevolence" and "righteousness." A rites-based social order was aimed at achieving "Pareto Optimality" in whole society in which everyone can maximize his utility without making any other individual worse off.But in history this kind of ideal mode often experienced multiple challenges and even rendered useless core values of the rule of rites. As a result, the ordinary people were heavily burdened, wealth distribution was extremely uneven, and social order collapsed, making social equilibrium created by rule of rites end up with failure.Nevertheless, the ideas of demand, allocation and governance contained therein are worthy of careful study and exploration.
