An Analysis of Classical Chinese Concept of "Harmony" and Its Political Meaning

Lin Cunguang
It can be said that "harmony" is the simplest, oldest and most long-lasting social ideal and political aspiration in human society. The traditional Chinese thought of "harmony" as well as its corresponding political ideas originated in the remote ancient period of Yao and Shun, the sage kings, established its foundation in the Western Zhou dynasty, and finally matured during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods—an axial age when pre-Qin thoughts flourished.A thorough investigation and analysis of the connotation of the concept of "harmony" and its political meaning not only enables us to have a deeper understanding of Chinese history, but makes us better positioned to keenly perceive and grasp what we are thinking and doing now.
