Maritime Civilization and Social Transition in Medieval Western Europe

Zhang Chunnian
A society cannot sustain without commerce. But as Western Europe inland was once dominated by manor economy,it could not generate market and business development was therefore difficult;that is why commercial revival had to start from the coastal areas. In the 13th century, encouraged by commerce, especially foreign trade, monetary economy finally obtained a leading role in place of the former natural economy in Western Europe, which promoted exchanges between different civilizations, brought Western European civilization to a new stage and ushered in a new era for Western European society.Maritime civilization produced profound influences on progress of the Western European society, and guided it out of the Middle Ages and into the embraces of capitalism.
