Duterte's Asia Pacific Strategy and Maneuvering

Zhou Yongsheng;
By participating in the ASEAN regional affairs, Duterte tries to strengthen the position of the Philippines in the ASEAN cooperation. Moreover, his main international strategy is to adjust relations with great powers, take the initiative in getting close to China, maintain active cooperation with Japan, take advantage of the US as it wants to compete with and contain China, and berate the US in order to urge it to give the Philippines more economic and military aid and more real interests. Generally, Duterte's great power strategy is to be economically dependent on China so as to promote the development of the Philippines; continue to rely on the US in terms of military security; and continue to strengthen the close cooperation with Japan, in order to contain the US and China. Duterte's international strategy is, in fact, a realistic geopolitical rebalancing strategy, with a goal to acquire the greatest possible benefits for the Philippines.
