Analysis methods and mechanism research for the effect of rim seal flow on the performance of turbine

Full three-dimensional models of four different inlet boundary conditions of source term and case without seal flow and the coupling analysis of the turbine main flow with rim seal flow had been developed, then the difference of the numerical results were contrasted. It showed that the defect of the velocity on the rim seal flow injected into the main flow passage with a negative incidence of 101 degree, and attacked on the suction side of the blade, resulting in the decrease of the blade loading. And then the seal flow rose up to the tip and enforced the passage vortex evidently. The effect on the turbine performance of the seal flow depended on the difference of the velocity triangles between the seal flow and the main flow near the hub; the smaller the differences were, and the less adverse effect on the turbine performance was.The source term method used for the flow boundary with big negative incidence loading on the rotating domain could get more accurate results of the interaction between the seal flow and the main flow.
