PROSPECT OF ECONOMIC COOPERATION IN THE ASIAN-PACIFIC REGION IN THE LIGHT OF THE EUROPEN COMMUNITIES

Wang Enyong;Li Guicai,Department of Geography,Peking University,Beijing,China
Europen Communities (EC) is a very important organization in political and economic integration. But it is difficult for the Asian-Pacific region to become a similar organization, because many conditions here are different from those in Western Europe. The conditions for the emergence of EC at that time were mainly the concentration in geographical position, the coincidence in political regional interests, and the similar level in economic development. In the Asian-Pacific Region, there are several distinctive conditions favourvable to the economic cooperation, such as coexistence of two tendencies of the global interdependence and the regionalization and regional grouping in the wrold econorry;the close economic-trade relations within the region;the rich resources and the machanism of their complementing each other;and increa-sing ideas and efforts for cooperation. But there are,at the same time, unfavurable factors including:the asymmetry of the regional economies;the serious economic friction;the intertwinement and the confrontation among many political and military relationships;the great differences among the aims of countries taking part in the cooperation;the lack of foundamental mechanism for the political stability and mutual confidence. Thus,if we want to get economical cooperation within the Asian-Pacific region, the mechanisms of stability and the confidence in political relations should,at first,be made and maintained, then economic cooperation in many-ways and on multi-levels should be made according to the principles of common development and equality and mutual benefit.China is a great developing country with attractive potential market for other countries. She must actively participate in this economic cooperation for her own economic development and booming, and for peace and stability of this region in politics and development in economy.
